In the years after the death of the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, the nation entered an age of cultural revolution called the movida madrileña (or, the Madrid Movement). The Spanish could explore and express themselves in new ways that countries close by had practiced for many years. In popular opinion, the movement really began in 1980 during the tribute to Canito concert. At this concert, many groups who would go on to be very popular during the movement performed, defining the new artistic scene that marked the Madrid Movement. The importance of music in the Madrid Movement did not end with this event. Music served as an influential medium through which young people shared new ideas and styles, ending an age of repression. – Alma Ben-Zaken

This song was released in 1984 on their second album, La ley del desierto / La ley del mar. The band re-released an edited version of the song in 1989 in an album titled Escueladecalor. El directo de Radio Futura. Radio Futura has a very recognizable eighties sound, with influences from the British New Wave, as well as African American elements, of which “Escuela de Calor” is a great example. The combination of these influences in the song creates similarities to other bands of the eighties like The Talking Heads. The band was also heavily influenced by music in Madrid in this era and the movida madrileña, of which Radio Futura was one of the most important bands. The song has references to Madrid, such as “hay tribus ocultas cerca del río,” which refers to the indigenous people and marginalized or counterculture communities living in the neighborhoods near the Manzanares river in the city. The theme of this song treats heat as a metaphor for the difficulties of life and possibly of romance. The line “hace falta valor,” means that it takes courage, and you receive courage in the school of heat or through difficult experiences. – Maud Ferris Wayne

The band was also made up of other members. Los Secretos released the song “Se Fue Como Llegó” as part of their self-titled album in 1981. The song is about the nature of love: how it comes and goes over time, whether long or short. This possible truth causes pain for the narrator, but he must accept it in his brief relationship with a woman. This song fits the movida madrileña and the music of the era because much of the music has themes of love and the nature of romance.

Eduardo Benavente, who played the drums and the guitar with Alaska y los Pegamoides, traveled to London and fell in love with post-punk and gothic rock music there. When he returned to Spain, he transformed the pop band that he had with his brother into Paralásis Permanente, with a style more similar to what he heard in London. Some members, including Benavente’s brother, left very early in the life of the group, but Eduardo Benavente, Anna Curra, Rafa Balmaseda, and Jorje “Toti” Árboles were members until the death of Benavente in a car accident. The project occurred at the same time as Alaska y los Pegamoides, and Curra and Benavente stayed in the two groups. The album El Acto, with the song “Jugando a las Cartas,” was released in 1982. The song is about how enjoyable it is to do scandalous things in the cemetery, like gambling and picnics with alcohol. Songs like this introduced the punk style to Span and discussed behavior that had been taboo. Because of this, they helped to change the sound and the mindset that defined the movida madrileña. – Alma Ben-Zaken
Kaka de Luxe was a punk band important to the movida madrileña, and many of its members formed the more famous band Alaska y los Pegamoides. One member of the band, Nacho Canut, was a founding member of Parálisis Permanente, and some other members started Radio Futura. This is one of the reasons why Kaka de Luxe is so important. Kaka de Luxe formed in 1977. Previously the members were artists who made comics and fanzines, and they decided to start a band because they needed money. The band dissolved a year later in 1978, before the formation of Alaska y los Pegamoides. “Viva el Metro” is a song from the album Las Canciones Malditas (the cursed songs), released in 1983–five years after the dissolution of the band. The album was released without the band members’ permission, and they received no compensation for the songs and demos that they had written. “Viva el Metro” is a sarcastic and satirical song about the metro in Madrid, which they call “el metro más feo en Europa” (the ugliest metro in Europe). It’s a commentary about urban life in Madrid and the post-Franco economy, topics very important to the movement at the time. – Maud Ferris Wayne
The song “Branquias bajo el agua” was written by the band Derribos Arias. Released in 1982, it introduced themes which were used in many of the band’s later songs. The song is a weird story about swimming with fish in a tank filled with green and blue seaweed and dancing without a care. This song is part of the musical movement of the time, because during the summer in Madrid, the radio was filled with new songs that all sounded very similar; Derribos Arias wanted to create a track that stood out as something unusual. The band members sought something new and different—something that didn’t sound like all the other new releases. – Jack Meyer
The song “Horror en el Hipermercado” was written by the band Alaska y los Pegamoides. It was released in 1980 and is considered one of the best songs written by the band. “Horror en el Hipermercado” is the story of a trip to the supermarket with a character called Mara Pili. Mara Pili is described as “rica y guapa” (rich and pretty) and has a skirt made of rubber. The chorus is loud and fast, provoking a sense of anxiety. Mara Pili goes missing and cannot be found. The narrator waits in the accessories aisle. At the end of the song the narrator finds Mara Pili’s limbs including her head and arms but the narrator is more annoyed than angry. This song represents the Madrid movement in many different ways. The period prior to the song marked the introduction of mass consumerism such as supermarkets into Spanish culture. Often viewed as bland and boring, the supermarkets that arrived with mass-consumerism at the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s were viewed by the counter culture as a loss of individual identity. The song expresses the band’s anger against capitalism and how it can steal people’s identity and individuality. – Jack Meyer
The song “Hija de la Luna” was written and performed by the band Mecano. It was released in 1986 and is considered the band’s best song. The song is about a white woman and a black man who want to marry, but their communities don’t support cross-race marriage. The woman makes a deal with the moon that the moon can have their first child if it grants them the ability to marry. A few years later, they have their first kid. The father cannot understand why the baby is albino instead of mixed race. He assumes his wife slept with a white man, so he stabs her to death with a knife. Then he brings the baby to the top of a mountain and abandons him. The legends say that when the moon is bright and full it means the child is in good health. Whenever the baby cries the moon turns into a crescent shape for the baby to rest. The song expresses the feelings of the Madrid movement because it is a quirky haunting melody that combines different characteristics of music across different genres. The song also has themes of adultery, which the Franco regime would not have let the media talk about because of their very conservative views. Furthermore the song has themes of racism because the black man is not allowed to marry the white woman. Mecano was known for synth-pop and electronic style songs, and this song marked the beginning of more complex topics such as racism and adultery. – Jack Meyer
