Reaction: Can – Ege Bamyasi

The History and Popular Music of the ’70s class learned about Can’s experimental record from 1972. Here are some of their reactions.

This piece represents the strange admixture of miraculous rhythms, uncertain vocals, and loose sound. My art mimics the front cover of the album, Ege Bamyasi by Can, but instead of a sealed can, it shows what’s all up in there. You see different textures, iridescence, shine, colors, shapes and sizes. This is how this album makes me feel. You don’t know what’s coming next! You usually can determine what the contents of canned food will be, but not this one! The shine on each piece of glitter portrays that there is more than meets the direct eye. You see so many different colors and types of beads, and within those individual beads, there’s even more. The cycle never ends. My art illustrates how crazy, multifaceted and unpredictable this album is. – Ingrid Lam

Since the album is by Can, I thought it would be funny to actually use a can in my response. I used a can of peas, I think. The entire process of painting took about four hours between each coat. – Malia Billingsley
