Contrary to Nominative Determinism, John Carpenter’s Films Are Not Particularly Well Crafted

Life, Interrupted: Kai Miller Castles

When this whole thing first went over, I thought, “Great. I’ll have lots of extra time, and perhaps I’ll be able to move my workspace to like an armchair or something.” Well, guess what. I didn’t get the extra time that I thought I would have because school went online, but…for the first month (about), I got an armchair. It looked something like this:

Later on, I moved to the couch just a few meters away. I thought the couch might give me more room to organize my work.

As you can tell, this didn’t go too well either. A mess. Again. Well, let’s try one more time. Third time’s the charm, right?

My parents really loved this move. Especially the tea. The basement was my next stop–already a mess. Right around here, my computer broke down (the computing system couldn’t find the boot drive), so I had to download a MacOS onto a hard drive. You can see it in the photo, plugged into the computer. We call it the terabytten. Anyway, back to the basement.

I just added to the mess. And then the nook. The last place where I’ll ever be an eighth grader. And my greatest success. See how little mess that is?

  1. Kai,

Wonderful piece! I love the breezy conversational tone interspersed with those “mess” photos. Reminds me of my own dining room table when I’m struggling to get something accomplished within this disheartening Covid time. Thank you for a lovely article and a gentle lift! Thank you, Kai!
